Teeth Whitening

The smile line and teeth are one of the first things people notice when looking at each other.  A healthy, vibrant smile can give a person the self-confidence back they never had before due to embarrassment caused by discolored teeth.  Teeth whitening is one of the most commonly performed dental procedures in the world.  Whitening, if done properly, can produce dramatic, long-lasting results with minimal to no sensitivity.

Yellowing and graying of the tooth’s enamel is a normal part of aging.  Discoloration of teeth is also caused by the foods and beverages which are most commonly consumed in a person’s diet.  Of course, other lifestyle factors such as tobacco usage can result in the unsightly appearance of teeth.  Restoring the white, glossy, and pearl like vitality to your teeth’s enamel can remove years of discoloration from the teeth restoring a youthful appearance.

There are many methods available for whitening teeth but they can be divided into two categories:  professional prescription strength whitening under a dentist’s supervision and over-the-counter ‘OTC’ whitening.    OTC whitening does not have the same strength as prescription whitening agents, and therefore does not produce dramatic or long-lasting effects.    Furthermore,  OTC whitening products used without the guidance of a dental professional may lead to sensitivity or pain due to undiagnosed dental conditions (such as cavities) which are incidentally contaminated with whitening agents.

Prescription strength dental whitening produces the most predictable, dramatic, and long-lasting results.  There are several options available: in-office whitening, take-home whitening, or a combination of both.  In-office whitening produces the most dramatic whitening effects in the least amount of time.  Typically, in-office whitening takes approximately one-hour and produces teeth that are six shades whiter.  In-office whitening is the most common method of whitening for most individuals due to the time-savings and dramatic results.  Take-home whitening  uses custom made trays which are worn nightly for 2 weeks for only 15 minutes each night.  Take-home whitening produces good results and can be used alone or as a touch-up months after initial whitening has been completed.

For individuals who desire the most vivid, youthful, and long lasting effects  the combination of take-home whitening and in-office whitening is the best option.  The procedure is simple, convenient, and produces little to no sensitivity.

Tooth whitening is a convenient, simple, and easy way to enhance your teeth and overall appearance but like any medical procedure needs to be performed in a controlled and well executed manner.  If you are interested in whitening, please call our office or request an appointment to discuss which option is right for you.
